Global Reach

View | Notable Global Matters

Serving clients globally as an integrated, cross-practice team from hub offices on four continents

For the seventh consecutive year, Mayer Brown has been selected by Law360 as a “Global 20” leading international firm. The list recognises the 20 law firms that had “the biggest global presence and handled the most large, significant and groundbreaking international and cross-border matters over the past year,” according to the publication. Mayer Brown has been ranked every year since the list’s inception.

We have a proven record of managing complex multi-jurisdictional projects, and are able to put in place the necessary support infrastructure to meet our clients’ objectives in a seamless manner, including where necessary with dedicated project managers, process mapping tools and state-of-the-art technology.

Where appropriate, we draw on external third party resources (for example forensic accounting, data processing and third party screening services). We have extensive experience of deploying such resources, while retaining legally robust procedures (including in relation to legal privilege), and ensuring co-ordination, supervision and reporting on the basis of agreed parameters.

We have an on-the-ground full service presence that enables us to offer access to the highest quality local market experience in key business centres in Europe, the Americas and Asia. Our presence in those regions corresponds closely with many of our global clients’ key business locations.

In Europe, we have more than 450 lawyers who practise across a range of transactional, regulatory and litigation areas from our offices in London, Brussels, Paris, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf.

In the Americas, Mayer Brown has a strong US presence with offices in Charlotte, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Palo Alto and Washington, D.C. While many of our US lawyers and partners are based in the United States, we also have US-qualified lawyers in each of our non-US offices. In addition, through our alliance law firm, Tauil & Chequer Advogados (T&C), we offer a strong presence in Brazil with more than 140 lawyers in Brasília, São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, which complements our recently opened office in Mexico.

In Asia, we have approximately 300 lawyers and trade/customs professionals who are based in offices in Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore, Guangzhou, Bangkok, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and they include one of the largest groups of Chinese legal specialists in the region. Our capabilities in this region have been further enhanced through our recent association with Jingtian & Gongcheng, a renowned PRC law firm headquartered in Beijing, with offices in Shanghai, Shenzhen, Chengdu and Hong Kong.

In the Middle East, we have recently opened an office in Dubai.

In addition, we have developed strong links with leading firms in jurisdictions where we have no physical presence. We regularly advise on matters involving these jurisdictions in conjunction with local counsel. We have long established in-house groups that focus on managing the network of “best friend” firms we have created in regions around the world in which we do not have an on-the-ground physical presence. This includes our Africa Group, which comprises internationally qualified lawyers with experience working on a range of matters in francophone, anglophone and other jurisdictions. We also have a very active Japan client initiative. Our close relationships with firms with local knowledge allow us to work in tandem with them to provide accurate and robust risk assessments, and provide us with the necessary insight to produce clear recommendations. Our significant experience of working with our partners in these regions provides a real extension of our capabilities and has also allowed us to develop tried-and-tested project management skills to ensure that both on-site and remote support on projects is delivered effectively.

Just as importantly, we act as one firm, with a deeply embedded culture of cross-office cooperation which produces seamless and consistent legal services across all regions. This also ensures that project management of multi-jurisdictional matters is delivered efficiently. Furthermore, the history of Mayer Brown’s development as a global firm through the strategic combination of long established firms in the world’s leading commercial jurisdictions ensures that we offer strength-in-depth in all of our primary disciplines and across our various core industry sectors.

How our global reach benefits our clients

The combination of our on-the-ground coverage and network of “best friend” firms provides us with the necessary global reach to undertake internal investigations wherever our clients are located.

We have, or have ready access to, in-depth local knowledge of the legal, commercial, political and cultural issues that underpin the development of our analysis, including the identification of the business units, regions and specific risks that will require the most urgent consideration.

We have the experience of conducting large scale multi-jurisdictional projects that enable us to deliver programmes efficiently, working seamlessly as appropriate with local law firms and other services providers as required, and providing a “one-stop-shop” service.
